About Brissago: Facts about Brissago
Welcome to Brissago, a charming Swiss village located on the shore of Lake Maggiore (Lago Maggiore) and the lowest altitude point in Switzerland at just 197 meters above sea level. With a mild climate and many sunny days per year, it's the perfect destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
The village is situated on the steep mountains rising from the lake and is separated by three main valleys that descent from the above mountains. As it's located in the canton of Ticino, Italian is the official language, but you'll often hear German, French, and English as well.
Hint: One of the most popular attractions in the area is the Brissago islands, a twin island paradise that offers an escape from stress and noise. The islands boast beautiful gardens, a huge collection of plants and trees, and breathtaking views. The main island features a botanical garden that was built between 1885 and 1928 by Baroness Antonietta Saint-Léger and later by other owners. The islands have a special microclimate, being the only spot in Switzerland where the temperature never goes below 0°C in the winter, allowing for the growth of warm-climate plants and trees. Today, the neo-classical villa on the island contains a restaurant and the administrative offices of the Botanical Park of Canton Ticino.
