About Brissago: Facts about Brissago
Brissago — Switzerland's Southern Secret
Tucked along the shore of Lake Maggiore at just 197 metres above sea level — the lowest point in all of Switzerland — Brissago enjoys a climate that feels more Italian Riviera than Alpine. Mild winters, abundant sunshine, and a landscape of steep mountains plunging directly into the lake make this one of the most extraordinary villages in the country. Though firmly Swiss (Canton Ticino), Italian is the soul of the place — yet you'll hear German, French, and English drifting through the terraces too.
The village is shaped by three valleys descending from the mountains above, each adding to the dramatic scenery that surrounds you at every turn.
Hidden gem: The Brissago Islands
Just offshore lie two small islands that feel like another world entirely. The Brissago Islands are Switzerland's only frost-free spot — temperatures never drop below 0°C, creating a unique microclimate that nurtures subtropical and warm-climate plants found nowhere else in the country. The botanical garden on the larger island was originally created between 1885 and 1928 by Baroness Antonietta Saint-Léger — a visionary ahead of her time. Today, the neo-classical villa hosts a restaurant and the offices of the Botanical Park of Canton Ticino. Pure magic, a short boat ride away.
